| 2/26/2009: Press Release: Pentucket Youth Hockey and Greater Haverhill Youth Hockey to Merge | (Published by Pam Atwood) |
The Boards of Pentucket Youth Hockey and Greater Haverhill Youth Hockey have announced both memberships voted overwhelmingly to merge their associations for the upcoming 09-10 ice hockey season. “This merger will give area ice hockey players a competitive, cost effective program” said Pentucket President Pam Atwood. The program will play a 30 game schedule in the Valley League and have all its practices at the Veterans Memorial Rink in Haverhill. Most teams will practice twice a week during the year and have a 14 week professionally run skills program. “Nearly all our games and practices are within a 30 minute drive” said Haverhill President Bernie Hoar.
This season the bantam program (for players aged 13 & 14) was combined and proved very successful. “We had several players return to our program because of the joint effort” said Hoar. “By merging the programs our teams will be more balanced top to bottom” said Atwood.
Both associations have sent teams to tournaments in recent years to Montreal, Lake Placid and Waterville Valley.
Tryouts are expected to be held at the end of March.
The name and jersey designs will be determined by a contest.
GHPYH will serve as the Massachusetts Hockey Association affiliate for the towns of Georgetown, Groveland, Haverhill, Merrimac and West Newbury, New Hampshire towns of Atkinson and Plaistow and surrounding communities.
